Brian Choptain

Hello everyone, I am Brian Choptain and I am running for the position of Town Councillor. You might know me as the local ice technician who works at the LdB Curling Club in the winter or as the part time customer service clerk at our local MBLL store.

I have an avid interest in chess, curling, ice making, politics, history, and the decision making process. My interest in politics was sparked long ago when I was a young person watching the 1980 referendum and the repatriation debates on CBC in 1981 that led to our new Charter of Rights and Freedoms in 1982.

I've served as local school trustee in 1998, and as town councillor from 2018 - 2022, and served on the Library, LdB Community Centre, Youth Centre, Airport, and Winnipeg River Development Corporation Board. I also took several Economic Development courses put on by WRDC so I could better understand local development, tourism, and marketing. I learned how our airport plays a vital part in our local economy. I am currently serving a 2 year term as Local President for Area 5 Golico workers (Liquor Mart) and I am on the Golico Executive Committee. I learned that representing and giving a voice to people's concerns is an important part of service to your local community. Seeing how bargaining works first hand has also been an eye opening experience.

During my term as councillor, the Town of Lac du Bonnet updated their zoning plan.  I have learned that zoning is vitally important to local economic growth.  How a municipality zones its land can create growth or it can stall it.  Municipal zoning can also create long term costs that over time results in higher property taxes or it can help keep property taxes at a more sustainable rate for homeowners.  This all depends on how much residential land is zoned as low, medium, or high density and what is listed as conditional in each type of zoning.

Strong towns work when you have good strategic planning that includes all types of lifestyles whether that is cars, bikes, seniors, or the young.   Taking the time to understand issues, respect for other people's opinions, and learning that it takes time for things to move forward in the municipal world are important parts of being a town councillor.  Finally, working with the various partners is also vitally important for the Town of Lac du Bonnet to continue to grow in the future.

Let's all get out and vote.  It’s our community, it’s our future!
