Summary

The Labourer III is responsible for assisting municipal Public Works staff in completing their assigned tasks. He/she is expected to assist with the collection of garbage and recycling items, town beautification including grass cutting and trimming, street and sidewalk cleaning, provide assistance with cleaning facilities, equipment, tools and providing manual labour services as required.

The Labourer must also deal with residents and members of the public in a courteous and respectful manner. This includes receiving complaints about schedules and levels and quality of service. The Labourer must make note of and report on any such complaints and respond in a courteous and respectful manner.

Job Duties

• Provide training to new/seasonal employees in Labour I and II positions
• Provide mentorship to Labour I and II employees
• Repairs to equipment
• Grass cutting and trimming
• Tend to fallen/dying/dead trees
• Inspection of play structures and park equipment and provide maintenance/repair
• Hydrant flushing and flow testing
• Sewer line inspection – assess flows and check for frozen lines
• Culvert steaming
• Pick up household and business refuse in designated areas according to schedule
• Dispose of garbage at designated site
• Park maintenance – clear area of any litter, benches and picnic tables maintenance, water flowers, play structure maintenance, tree pruning
• Pick up recycling items and drop off to designated recycling depot
• Street cleaning – sweeping, pot hole repair, signage, seasonal lighting
• Snow removal on streets, sidewalks and driveways
• Operate all equipment in a safe and efficient manner according to all relevant legislation, policies and procedures
• Clean trucks as scheduled and/or required
• Ensure trucks and equipment are safely and securely stored
• Ensure equipment and tools are stored safely and securely
• Clean and make minor repairs to equipment and tools
• Ensure that municipal buildings are maintained in a clean and orderly manner
• Operate basic hand tools such as saws, shovels, rakes, etc.
• Operate basic power tools such as lawn mowers, trimmers, brush cutters, snow blowers, salt/sand spreader.
• Operate equipment such as the garbage truck loader, skid steer, tractor and riding lawn tractor.

Requirements

• High School Diploma, G.E.D. or equivalent.
• Mechanically inclined to complete repair work to equipment
• Experience working with hand tools, power tools and equipment.
• Strong working knowledge of plant needs regarding conditions and fertilization.
• Ability to participate in continuous improvement processes.
• Good observation skills to detect areas of the municipality that require attention for beautification, cleaning and clearing (snow).
• Ability to follow safe procedures for use of tools, equipment and machinery
• Must have the ability to work in the outdoors.
• Moderate physical strength and stamina.
• Able to get along with colleagues and customers at the workplace or in other locations.
• Ability to multi-task and establish priorities.
• Exhibit initiative, responsibility and flexibility.
• Ability to work independently in a busy environment.
• Strong attention to detail.
• Possess a valid driver's license with air brake endorsement.

• First Aid skills and/or certificates are considered assets.

Work Conditions

• 24/7 availability may be required.
• Physical ability to lift up to 50lb.
• Travel to the site, and off-site locations will be required.
• Safety equipment will be required, e.g. steel-toed safety boots, safety glasses/goggles, etc.
• Overtime as required.
• Hazards associated with the trade.
• Work both indoors and outdoors.
• Noisy with fumes.
• Long hours which may entail overtime.
• Prolonged standing, walking, lifting, squatting and bending.
• May perform work in adverse weather conditions including heat, cold and inclement weather.
